File Name Restrictions

Learn about file name restrictions in BoardWorks, including unsupported characters, naming rules, and requirements for uploading files and folders.

The following file name restrictions apply to all files uploaded to BoardWorks.

Unsupported characters

File names cannot contain any of the following characters:

  • Tilde ~

  • Number sign #

  • Percent %

  • Ampersand &

  • Asterisk *

  • Braces { }

  • Parentheses ( )

  • Backslash \

  • Colon :

  • Angle brackets < >

  • Question mark ?

  • Forward slash /

  • Pipe |

  • Quotation mark “”

  • Plus +

Period (.) usage rules

The period character has the following restrictions in file names:

  • Periods cannot be used consecutively in the middle of a file name

    • Example: My..Document.pdf ❌

  • File names cannot end with a period

    • Example: MyDocument.pdf. ❌

  • File names cannot begin with a period

    • Example: .MyDocument.pdf ❌

Underscore (_) behavior

  • If a file name begins with an underscore (_), the file is treated as a hidden file

    • Example: _MyDocument.pdf

Restricted ending strings

File names and folder names cannot end with any of the following strings:

  • .files

  • _files

  • -Dateien

  • _fichiers

  • _bestanden

  • _file

  • _archivos

  • -filer

  • _tiedostot

  • _pliki

  • _soubory

  • _elemei

  • _ficheiros

  • _arquivos

  • _dosyalar

  • _datoteke

  • fitxers

  • _failid

  • _fails

  • _bylos

  • _fajlovi

  • _fitxategiak
